The train is the nicest way to arrive: the last hour runs through rolling tea gardens, and Sreemangal station is a short rickshaw ride from most resorts.

Spend a morning in Lawachara National Park — go with a local guide if you want to spot the hoolock gibbons — and an afternoon walking the estates, where you can watch the leaf being weighed at the end of the day.

Don't leave without trying the famous seven-layer tea, poured in distinct coloured bands. It's a novelty, but a delicious one.
